Local Health Fairs
In addition to our global projects, SHE has embarked on local health education initiatives to address inequities in access to healthcare here in the US. We center our efforts in Long Beach and on occasion are invited to participate in health fairs outside of Long Beach, such as the Inglewood 5K Run/Walk hosted by UCLA. With over 50,000 residents of Cambodian descent, many of whom came to the US as refugees, Long Beach has the largest concentration of Cambodians outside of Cambodia. Long Beach is a microcosm of many different cultures and we are happy to serve them all. SHE’s vision is to take our message of health empowerment and translate it into different languages. SHE is focused on supporting our global family.
Health & Wellness Fair
November 24, 2019
SHE Board members led and collaborated closely with four local Long Beach non-profit organizations and the Councilmember for District 4, 60 pre-med and dental students from UCLA, including many from Long Beach, to present what has been noted as the most well-organized and educational Health and Wellness Fair at that time targeted to the Cambodian population and general community. This event served as a catalyst and set the stage for future health fair partnerships and health education opportunities for SHE.
Most notable were the health education classes, exhibitors who also provided education, and the services rendered, including dental, BMI, BP and vision screening for reading glasses, and a chance to "ask a doctor" general questions. The Health & Wellness Fair was a resounding success. We estimated 200 people, and close to 350 attended. Topics included were mental health, stroke, communicable diseases, kidney health, heart health, diabetes, women's health, obesity and others. The MAYE Center and its Director contributed greatly to its success as the location was convenient, the road was closed off by the Councilmember, and the MAYE Director assisted us greatly with marketing the event.
Inglewood Active Communities 5K Run/Walk & Health Fair
October 30, 2022
Hosted by the Inglewood Active Communities, UCLA Health, and the American Heart Association, this event was a family-friendly 5K run/walk celebrating healthy living. SHE was invited to host several health education booths and supplied the largest on-site team of health educators. SHE’s interactive booths provided critical information covering general health topics, CPR and women’s health focusing on breast health.
In keeping with our tradition of sponsoring local health fairs, we completed a very successful health fair in October, in partnership with the American Heart Association and UCLA Health, where we educated--individually and in small groups--over 125 women on breast self-awareness and on differential risks for a variety of female cancers (endometrial, ovarian, cervical, and breast), especially those faced by African-American women. We also offered education on sustainable healthy living, focusing on disease prevention through a healthy lifestyle. Additionally, a team of medical students used life-sized CPR mannequins to teach CPR to both men and women, as well as to some children (hands-on).
Equity Project: Cambodians and Communities
Launched in 2023, we embarked on a large-scale health equity initiative consisting of a series of health fairs across Long Beach promoting health equity within our community. As an organization committed to improving the overall well-being of individuals, we recognize the importance of ensuring equal access to healthcare and empowering individuals to take control of their own health. Our health fairs serve as a platform for information, education, and support, addressing the diverse health needs of community members across all socio-economic backgrounds. Through this initiative, we aim to provide the community with access to a wide range of healthcare services, including health screenings, preventive care, wellness workshops, and generalized consultations with medical professionals who made recommendations to participants to see their own medical providers.
Cambodian Community Equity Health Fair: Journey to Healthy Living
May 20, 2023
Hosted at the Billie Jean King Main Library, this event was one of SHE’s largest health fairs of its kind focusing especially on serving the unique needs of the Cambodian community in Long Beach. With outreach conducted throughout the greater Long Beach area, the event involved over 80 volunteers and a diverse range of healthcare professionals across several universities and community partners.
This event served over 400 people and was filled with informative sessions, interactive workshops, and engaging discussions that catered to diverse aspects of health and wellness. Participants had the opportunity to attend talks by renowned health experts covering topics such as nutrition, exercise, mental wellness, CPR, breast health, and COVID-19. Moreover, the fair also featured a colorful variety of interactive workshops including dancing, yoga, games, and meditation where participants actively engaged in hands-on activities related to health and wellness. This event also served the unhoused population in the neighboring area from all ethnic backgrounds.
